Therapy
Dog
The main purpose in training your dog to become a therapy dog is to
provide your dogs companionship to patients in hospitals, nursing homes, retirement
facilities and various other institutions that therapy dog services are needed.
Therapy dogs promote healing, emotional well being and a quality of life for the people
they visit. Port Chester Obedience Training club's active Therapy Dog program visits
patients in the New York City area. Any mixed breed and pure-bred dog is eligible to
become a Therapy Dog.
The TDI test is a bit harder and more intense than the Canine Good Citizen Test , but basically the
same. The dog must also be familiar with wheel-chairs, crutches, and walkers.
This test is wonderful as you also can bring your dog to nursing homes and the like.
The residents at nursing homes appreciate having the dogs there to touch, to watch, to pet
and the dogs love the attention they get from the patients they visit.
